It’s been almost two years since Wafia was last featured on MIML. She returns to the blog with ‘Bodies’, her protest song for the current era.
Born to a Syrian mother and Iraqi father and now based in Australia, Wafia wrote ‘Bodies’ on the day her Syrian family was denied entrance visas to Australia.
“I wanted to draw similarities between the large groups of Syrian refugees walking miles to safety and those that can protest freely in the western world. I can’t think of anything more human and simple than reminding ourselves that we are fragile bodies but the strength that can come of bodies in large numbers. We live in a world where so many things are difficult and divisive but I wanted this song to be accessible and inclusive because at the end of the day we all want to be a part of something bigger than us and this is the best way I knew how to portray that.” – Wafia
