Interviews

Q&A with UK artist, CHARLOTTE

Hey music lovers! I have a great Q&A to share with you today.

Meet CHARLOTTE, an artist discovered by worldwide hit maker Toby Gad– writer of ‘All of Me’ (John Legend), ‘If I Were A Boy’ (Beyonce), ‘Big Girls Don’t Cry’ (Fergie) and more.

It was last month, I first heard her tune ‘I Tell Lies’ taken from her ‘Nowhere To Hide’ EP – out on June 7.

I was immediately impressed and I jumped at the chance to interview this amazing artist. She tells MIML what inspires her, and talks about her upcoming EP.

Check it out.

How long have you been involved in music?

I’ve been surrounded by music my whole life. I first got up on stage when I was 3 at one of my grandparent’s gigs and started writing proper songs when I was 6. I got involved with as many performance opportunities as possible when I was growing up. However, I started doing writing sessions in the industry and doing shows as an artist when I was 17.

What inspires you?

My family. My friends. Life. Being outdoors. Travelling. My dog. Growing up. Food. Specifically potatoes and bread.

What would you want people to know about your music and your style?

That I have no idea how to write a ‘good’ song or what genre I’m classed as. I’m just writing about the things that are true to me and singing the notes that sound like the way I feel.

Your EP drops on June 7th what is the overall theme?

The EP is fully inspired by growing up and all the things that are part and parcel of that process. Insecurity, loneliness, screwing up and working out how to be a functioning adult.

How long did it take to put it together and what was that process like for you?

I wrote the songs over a period of 2 years and there were a LOT of songs that had to be written and put aside to make way for these ones. I had several tough sessions with tears and bad moods whilst attempting to get the deepest home truths out. At times it felt like I was digging too deep but I’m glad that I did now.

I’m sure you love all the songs but can you say which one is your favourite and why?

I think Somebody To Hold is my favourite. Probably because the other songs are about things that I’ve made a lot of progress with so although they’re still relevant to me, I don’t necessarily feel them as intensely as I did when I wrote them. With Somebody To Hold that song’s still as relevant to me now as it was the day I wrote it.

When you’re not doing music, what do you do?

I take naps. Continuously snack. I love lifting heavy weights and sprinting. It helps keep my mind healthy. At the moment, the time I’m not doing music is rare so when I do have days off I try and see my family and friends. And if I have a big chunk of time off then I reunite with one of my favourite things: beer.

Lastly, what’s one word you would use to describe yourself?

Hungry.
