Today is a good day! Why? Because I have the honour of premiering Niiko x SWAE’s and Alicia Madison’s new video for their summer hit ‘Flavor’. If you haven’t heard the song before, I’ll tell you now, this is a song you need in your life.
The track features vibrantly airy and bright productions with a dash of tropical house from the Los Angeles-based DJ/Producer duo Niiko X SWAE which perfectly complement Alicia Madison’s sultry and sexy vocals throughout the verses before the hard-hitting drop comes in during the chorus line.
The video for the track is one that is going to leave you with a huge smile on your face because you can see that they had a lot of fun shooting this and after you watch it you might be craving your favourite ice cream. I sure am.
Check it out!
In addition to premiering the video, I also got the opportunity to interview Alicia and Niiko X SWAE . Alicia shared with me, her background, what it was like working the duo and some of her highlights for the year. Niiko X SWAE talked about the song, what it was like shooting the video and even shared with me what their favourite ice cream flavour is.
Have a read.
Tell me about yourself? How long have you been involved in music?
I was born in Brooklyn, NY and come from a very musical family. I have been singing since I was 13 years old. I started songwriting and really entered the music industry when I was 23.
Tell me a bit about ‘Flavor’. What inspired the track?
I received this great track from Niiko X SWAE and felt like it needed a very sassy top-line. I had a very specific feeling and idea of the song as I heard the track. Sometimes that just happens. I wrote the lyrics and melody in about an hour in my bedroom.
How was it filming the video? Who came up with the concept?
I have to say that I had so much fun filming with the boys. It was about 100 degrees in LA that day, but we had such a great experience, regardless. They came up with 90s vibe and I came up with the ice cream theme. I just pictured them as an ice cream shop or truck owners, bright colors and me eating a bunch of flavors of ice cream. We are all pretty goofy and were all about making this a super light-hearted video with some sexy undertones.
We’re 9 months into the year, what’s been the highlight for you so far?
I’m happy to say I had a few highlights this year. My song ‘Insanity’ was nominated for Best Dance Song at ‘The Promo Only Summer Sessions’ this year. It was honestly the biggest honor for me to have a #1 song in the dance radio and in the US. Also, ‘Flavor’ is doing very well and just reached the #13 spot on Billboard Club Chart!
What projects do you have coming up?
I have a couple more songs I am releasing before the year ends. I also have been writing for a bunch of artists. I wrote a song called ‘One More Time’ for 17 year old artist, Mahkenna, which was just recently released. The lyrics are very genuine and close to home for me.
Is there anyone you would like to work with?
I would like to work with Cash Cash, The Chainsmokers, Zedd, and David Guetta.
When you’re not doing music, what do you do?
When I’m not working, you can find me watching Netflix shows, bowling and going to food truck festivals!
Lastly, what’s one word would you use to describe yourself?
Niiko X SWAE:
What was the process like working on this song with Alicia?
The process was really fun and easy. We created the instrumental while in college at SMU in Dallas and sent it to Alicia via Gary and it only took her 1 take to perfectly nail the lyrics. We were so stoked when we got the demo back and we didn’t want her to change anything lyrically. It was a very smooth and genuine process and we were extremely happy with the result.
The song has amassed thousands of streams worldwide, what are your thoughts on that?
We are very honored and blessed to see new countries picking up Flavor each week. We knew it would make it into parts of Europe and Asia but it is pretty cool to check the Spotify stats and see ‘Flavor’ being played in countries that we never even anticipated the song would be successful in. It’s really gratifying to see something we worked so hard on being streamed and loved all over the world.
How was it filming the video?
Filming the video was one of the most fun music related experiences we have had. Beside the 100 degree heat, we were constantly laughing and making jokes during the filming. We have a bit of a childish side and it definitely came out for the video.
What is your favourite ice cream flavour?
We are huge chocolate guys.
